About Me

Brittney PendletonI came to the University of Maine after attending school at Islesboro Central School. It is a very small island school, (and by “small” I mean a yearly average of 80 students from grades K-12). Needless to say that because of such a small community I have grown close to people from various age groups and I have worked very closely with my teachers. Unlike other people, however, I am thankful for being a part of such a tight-knit community of people and I feel that it has given me a more open perspective of the world off the island. Also, what most people take for granted is that the students are offered different and unique opportunities. For instance, students are given the privilege to fundraise for a trip to a designation of their own choice (my class chose to travel to England and Scotland). Another example is that my school (along with other island schools) was offered a grant from the Farnsworth Museum in Rockland to work closely with local artists. A friend and I both spent a summer working with David Evelyn, an opportunity that I cherish. Over that summer I got to work with several mediums I had never used before and was able to get firsthand experience at what it was like to have work in a gallery.
I consider myself lucky to have grown up in such a supportive environment; for as long as I can remember, I had been encouraged to be creative and pursue art. It was because of this support from my peers that I continued to take Art and Graphic Arts classes in high school. In those classes I was mostly encouraged to work in traditional mediums but my interests were mainly those of a digital medium. It was around then that I found that the University of Maine had the New Media program that supported my interests and was still close enough to home where I could stay in close contact with my community.
